An awesome homemade pie could make anyone break out into song, but singer James Wright Chanel has taken things to another level in a now viral YouTube video where he serenades super star Patti LaBelle's Sweet Potato Pie, a pre-packaged dessert that's exclusively available at Walmart.
Thanks to Wright Chanel's video, the pies were selling at a rate of one pie per second for 72 hours straight from Friday to Sunday this past weekend. Stores throughout the country sold out and a black market opened up, with pies selling on eBay for as much as $12,000 for door-to-door delivery (they're only $3.98 each in the store). But don't panic if you absolutely need to get your hands on one of these desserts from the Queen of Rock and Soul: there's more pie on the way according to the retailer.
LaBelle worked with Walmart's team to develop the recipe for the pie and it has only been on shelves since September with a retail price of $3.98 and a current roll-back price of $3.48. "Our buyers knew that it would be popular but sales are completely exceeding expectations because of the viral video," says Forrest Ales.
Mama Patti is very grateful to James Wright, the man who made the sweet potato pie review, gone viral. But she says the success of her pie sales at Walmart is all her doing.
Well, that is partially true. The sweet potato pie recipe has been in her cookbook for years.
It was the recipe that James was responding to. But real talk, not many of us even knew Patti LaBelle’s pies were being sold in Walmart. And Black people take sweet potato pie so seriously that even if we did, many of us were too skeptical to try it, thinking that the flavor had been watered down in the mass production and packaging processes.
At 71 years of age, R&B super diva Patti LaBelle has experienced just about everything fame and good fortune could bore. But nothing could've prepared the 'Lady Marmalade' crooner for the avalanche of adulation she would receive from her latest endeavor; a line of boxed sweet potato pies exclusively sold at Wal-Mart stores since September.
The company, admittedly, didn't do anything to go out of its way to promote the product since its release two months ago. Even LaBelle, who was doing a battery of media chores earlier this month for her Lung Cancer Awareness campaign didn't mention it during appearances.
